Tour introduction:

The Orkhon Valley lies in the central part of Mongolia, 360 km southwest of Ulaanbaatar. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004, this region covers 121,967 ha of grassland along the historic Orkhon River. Our tour will take you to the highlights of the Orkhon Valley, including the ancient capital city of the Mongol Empire, Karakorum, and other numerous archaeological remains dating back to the 6th century such as Turkish memorials and Khar Balgas.

Day 1: Arrival in Ulaanbaatar, private transfer to the hotel

A member of our team will meet you at the airport after you have gone through customs and transfer to your hotel. Today is left free for you to get settled in and rest before your wonderful journey across Mongolia. Accommodation: Hotel****

Day 2: Tour of the City

Meet your English-speaking local guide at 9.00am in the hotel lobby for your tour of Ulaanbaatar. Today you will explore the main sights of this unique city. Visit the Gandan Monastery, housing a 26 meter high gilded statue of the Buddha, explore the Genghis Khan monument in the main square and the National Museum, which has a number of fascinating displays of traditional Mongolian clothing and weaponry, as well as exhibits charting the course of Genghis Khan's empire-building. We will have our first group lunch in a Mongolian restaurant. Afterwards visit the Bogd Khaan’s Palace Museum – the residence of the last king of Mongolia, the Buddha Park and the Zaisan Memorial located on a picturesque hill south of the city for a panoramic view of the nomadic capital and the Buddha Park. Transfer back to the hotel by 6 pm. Dinner is not included tonight, however we will make suggestions for you Accommodation: Hotel****,  B+L, 6 – 7 hr of excursion

Day 3: Ulaanbaatar – Elsen Tasarkhai Sand Dunes

In the early morning we will drive to Elsen Tasarkhai (Bayan Gobi) and Khugnu Khan Nature Reserve to marvel at the gorgeous rocky mountains and sand dunes. Upon arrival we will visit a camel breeder family and learn more about their nomadic lifestyle and the people of Mongolia. Enjoy an ultimate Mongolia bucket list experience by riding a camel for one hour around the nature reserve. Afterwards visit the Erdene Khamba Buddhist temple inside the Hogno Khaan Nature Reserve Park –a great place for hiking and that rewards you with spectacular reviews. Overnight in a ger camp. Accommodation: Ger camp, B+L+D

Day 4: Elsen Tasarkhai – Karakorum

After a delicious traditional breakfast, we drive to the ancient capital, Karakorum. Here we visit the legendary monastery Erdene Zuu, the first Buddhist monastery in Central Mongolia founded in 1586, as well as other nearby attractions such as Turtle Rock and the Phallic Stone. In the afternoon we will visit the newly established Museum of Karakorum which gives a great introduction to Central Mongolia, its history and the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Orkhon River Valley. Stay in a traditional ger camp. Accommodation: Ger camp, B+L+D

Day 5: A day trip to Tuvkhun Monastery

Today we visit the Tuvkhun Monastery, located in a picturesque location atop the Rocky Mountains and surrounded by forests 2300m above sea level. It is one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in Mongolia and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A picnic lunch is provided. Afterwards drive back to the ger camp for a rest before dinner.  
Note: There will be a 3km hike up and down to the Tuvkhun Monastery once we park the van. Part of it is steep and may be muddy; you can either hike or hire a horse to take you up the hill.

Day 6: Karakorum – Orkhon Waterfall

Today we will drive to the Orkhon Waterfall, one of the highest and most beautiful waterfalls in Mongolia. Along the way we will visit nomadic families to learn more about their lifestyle and experience their genuine hospitality. We will ride in the historic valley of the Orkhon River, stopping for lunch at a beautiful rest point, and arrive at the waterfall in the afternoon. Explore the area, with some optional hiking for those feeling active. Dinner and overnight at a nearby ger camp. Accommodation: Ger camp, B+L+D

Day 7: Orkhon Waterfall – Tsenkher Hot Springs

After breakfast we will have a full-day’s drive to the Tsenkher Hot Springs, with a stop in Tsetserleg town along the way to visit the Zay Bandida monastery. Enjoy a hot bath at the hot springs when we arrive in the afternoon. Dinner and accommodation in a nearby ger camp. Accommodation: Ger camp, B+L+D

Day 8: Tsenkher Hot Springs – Lake Ogii

In the morning we will pack up the vans and head off on another fun day of exploring Central Mongolia. On the way we will visit the Turkish stone site of Khushuu Tsaidam. Khushuu Tsaidam has four memorial complexes including those erected in honour of Bilge Khan, a famous leader of the Turkic Empire and Kul Tegin, a general of Turkish army. These memorials are the most important known archeological remains of the Turkic Empire, which extended across Central Asia in the 6-8 centuries AD. Arrive in Ogii and transfer to your ger camp.  Enjoy an optional horse ride along the lake. Overnight at the ger camp. Accommodation: Ger camp, B+L+D

Day 9: Lake Ogii - Hustai National Park

After breakfast we will drive to Hustai National Park, where the Takhi wild horses graze peacefully with other animals. Here we will watch a short documentary about the national park, before venturing out to search for the beautiful Takhi horses, birds and other wildlife. Overnight at the ger camp. Accommodation: Ger camp, B+L+D

Day 10: Hustai National Park – Terelj National Park

After breakfast we will drive to Terelj National Park, the most popular park in all of Mongolia, with a stop at the Giant Genghis Statue on the way. Arrive in the afternoon and transfer to a luxury tourist ger camp. Enjoy a visit to the iconic Turtle Rock and the Temple of Meditation. There is also a chance to do some optional hiking if you would like. Overnight in the ger camp. Accommodation: Ger camp, B+L+D

Day 11: Terelj National Park - Ulaanbaatar

After breakfast we drive back to Ulaanbaatar and check in to the hotel. For those interested, there will be optional souvenir and cashmere shopping. Enjoy a traditional folklore concert by the magical Tumen Ekh ensemble. There will be a farewell dinner tonight. Accommodation:  Hotel****, B+L+D

Day 12: Departure from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

End your tour with an included transfer to the airport or train station after breakfast. Accommodation: B
